Holland Hospital and University of Michigan Health plan to develop a new medical center in Zeeland for specialty care, building on a strategic affiliation the two health systems formed nearly two years ago.
The 62,700-square-foot, two-story facility has an early cost estimate of $45 million, including furnishings and equipment. The center would house medical specialties that UM Health intends to bring to the market, curbing the need for local patients to travel outside the area to access care.
Holland Hospital will develop the facility on a nearly 13-acre site it owns at 84th Avenue and Westpark Way. Holland Hospital has had a medical office building on the site for nearly two decades and partnered with Shoreline Orthopaedics to develop a clinic and outpatient surgery center that opened last year.
The project with UM Health, its first major initiative under their strategic alliance, is “about bringing access to specialty and subspecialty care locally, so people don’t have to drive for it,” Holland Hospital CEO Patti VanDort told Crain’s Grand Rapids Business.
“This truly is a partnership,” VanDort said. “It’s offering choice in the community in that regard, but I think it’s also just equally as important about two health care systems working together to do what’s best for a community.”
Holland Hospital and UM Health hosted a ceremonial groundbreaking Oct. 22 for the Westpark Specialty Center. Construction should begin in earnest in December and take 20 months to complete.
Holland-based EV Construction Co. is serving as the contractor on the project. Plainfield Township-based Progressive Companies designed the facility.
