Piece of Holland history unearthed at Quality Car Wash construction site

HOLLAND TWP. — Construction is ongoing at the new Quality Car Wash on River Avenue, but EV Construction never expected to run into a piece of bona fide Holland history.

Construction employees recently unearthed an old sign with the name Austin Harrington (1863-1939) inscribed on it. The sign has ties to Harrington Wood and Coal Co.

Austin was born the nephew of former Holland mayor E.J. Harrington, according to local historian Steve VanderVeen. He attended Hope College and Swinberg Business College in Grand Rapids, taught school in West Olive and Fillmore, and, later in life, opened his wood and coal yard at Eighth Street and Washington Avenue, where Boatwerks sits today.
