On the morning of Tuesday, October 13, city leaders, state legislators, firefighters, neighbors, and project partners gathered at 1823 Division Avenue South to cut the ribbon on the Grand Rapids Fire Department’s new Division Avenue Fire Station, Station No. 10. After roughly a year and a half of construction, the station is now officially in service.
EV Construction was proud to serve as the builder on this project, working alongside design partner Integrated Architecture and the City of Grand Rapids to deliver a station built for the firefighters and the neighborhood they protect.
A Station Designed Around the People Inside
The 18,900-square-foot, three-bay facility represents a $12 million investment in public safety on the city’s south side. It is home to 18 firefighters, with a crew of five on duty each day.
Inside, the station includes:
- Private dorm rooms for firefighters on 24-hour shifts
- A modern kitchen and dining area
- Officers’ quarters
- A dedicated fitness room
- Three drive-through apparatus bays
Every one of those spaces supports the health and readiness of the crew. As Fire Chief Brad Brown put it during the ceremony, “Rest is not a luxury in this profession. It’s a safety issue.”
Faster Response for the Neighborhood
The station’s location on Division Avenue South, between Elm and Rose Streets, was chosen strategically to improve emergency response times for the surrounding community. The city describes the facility as built to serve the neighborhood for the next 75 to 100 years.
The station also marks a first for the state. Opening during Hispanic Heritage Month, Station No. 10 is the first fire station in Michigan to feature bilingual signage, a meaningful reflection of the community it serves.
A Celebration of Partnership
Mayor David LaGrand, members of the City Commission, City Manager Mark Washington, Chief Brown, state legislators, and project partners all shared remarks, each emphasizing the importance of investing in public safety and in the people who provide it.
For EV, the opening is especially meaningful. Station No. 10 follows the Kendall Street Fire Station (Station No. 12), which EV built and which opened in September 2025 as the city’s first new fire station in nearly four decades. We’re grateful for the trust GRFD and the City have placed in our team to deliver two stations in just over a year. We’re honored to have built a place where Grand Rapids firefighters can rest, train, and respond, and where the neighborhood can count on them for generations to come.
