Every year, EV Construction opens the gates of an active project site to the people who matter most outside of it: the kids in our lives. On Tuesday, August 11, the tradition continued at the future home of the Holland Hospital Westpark Specialty Center in Zeeland, where EV employees, trade partners, and Holland Hospital team members brought their kids, nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and siblings out for an afternoon they won’t forget.
This is Future Builders: a chance for the next generation to see, touch, and experience what it actually means to build something real.
A Project Site Turned Playground (With a Purpose)
Before anyone touched a paintbrush or climbed into an excavator, every kid suited up in real PPE: hard hats, safety glasses, high-visibility T-shirts, and safety gloves. Real work on site was paused for the afternoon, but we still geared the kids up the same way our crews gear up every day, so they could explore and play safely from the very first station to the last.
For one afternoon, the Westpark site transformed into a hands-on adventure zone, without losing sight of what makes it a real construction project. Kids rotated through stations that let them explore the site the way our crews do every day, just scaled for smaller hands and bigger imaginations:
- Obstacle course – putting agility and teamwork to the test
- Painting station – a creative outlet with a project site twist
- Project tours – a firsthand look at the Westpark Specialty Center taking shape
- VR experience – stepping inside construction technology used to plan and visualize projects
- Layout robot demo – watching a robot print site plans directly onto the slab, precision most kids have never seen up close
- Scissor lift rides – gaining a new perspective, literally, from up above the site
- Giant sandbox – dirt, diggers, and imagination
- Remote-controlled equipment station – mini machines for mini operators
- Excavator operation – the highlight for many: sitting in the seat and running the controls of a real excavator
For a lot of these kids, it was their first time on an active construction site. For our teams, it was a reminder of why we do this work in the first place.
Built Around People, Every Generation Included
Future Builders is a direct extension of what EV Construction stands for: Built Around People. That doesn’t stop at the people who work for us or the communities we build in. It extends to their families, too.
Bringing kids onto a live project site takes real coordination. It means shutting down active work areas and treating safety with the same seriousness we bring to it every single day, a reflection of our EVery Day Safe. Leading From the Heart. culture. The result is an event where families can explore freely because our teams have already done the work to make it safe.
Why We Do It
The construction industry offers some of the best career opportunities out there: skilled trades, project management, technology, safety, and so much more, all with room to grow and build a career you can be proud of. We are always looking for the next generation of construction workers and tradespeople, and Future Builders is one of our favorite ways to plant that seed early. Maybe a few of the kids who sat in that excavator seat on August 11 will remember it as the moment they first thought, “I could do this.”
That is the point. We are not just building hospitals, senior living communities, and fire stations across West Michigan. We are building the future workforce that will build them next.
